DEMOCRATIC VALUES

The idea of Ungdommens Folkemøde NORD derives from the Danish youth democracy festival Ungdommens Folkemøde and Hal Koch’s understanding of democracy as a mindset that needs to be deep-seated in each generation.

With Ungdommens Folkemøde NORD we want to create an inclusive and democratic space for Nordic youth to come together and explore the future democracy and culture of our region. To make sure this vision becomes reality, we have put together a set of values for us, organizations, and visitors to live by while taking part in the festival.

RESPECT

We respect each other’s differences in experience, background, culture, and worldview. We meet each other with an open mind and curiosity, and we welcome dialogue with different perspectives and points of view. We might not always agree with each other and that’s okay! – it is through respectful dialogue with people with whom we don’t agree that we grow as democratic citizens.

SOCIAL INCLUSION

We accept everyone for who they are, and we don’t tolerate any discrimination or hate speech in relation to race, gender, age, disabilities, or sexual orientation. We will do our best to make sure everyone who participates at the festival feel safe and welcome. Violent behavior is not tolerated at Ungdommens Folkemøde NORD.

OPEN-MINDEDNESS

We are open-minded in our interactions with others. When we enter dialogues, we are open to perspectives different from our own. We understand that everyone makes mistakes, and we don’t judge people on their mistakes – we make mistakes ourselves. We see mistakes an opportunity to grow and we are open to change our points of views after learning from others.

EQUAL PARTICIPATION

We participate as equals, and we meet each other at eye-level. This means that no matter if you are a politician, a boss of a big company or a student, your opinion matters, and you will be listened to with respect and curiosity.

COOPERATION ACROSS BORDERS

We value the knowledge, experience, and culture of our Nordic neighbors, and we are eager to explore new ways to cooperate. We will let ourselves be inspired by each other, by sharing our dreams and ideas across national borders. Together we will shape the Nordic region of today and tomorrow.
